Sweet and Sour Tofu

This flavorful vegetarian dish strikes the perfect balance between tangy and sweet, delivering a delicious and wholesome meal. Quick and easy to prepare, it’s a go-to recipe for healthy, plant-based dining.


Ingredients Sweet and Sour Tofu :

Tofu:

  • 1 block (14 oz) firm tofu
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry)

Vegetables:

  • 1 red or yellow bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks (fresh or canned)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced

Instructions Sweet and Sour Tofu:

  1. Prepare the Tofu:
    • Press tofu for 30 minutes to remove moisture. Cut into bite-sized cubes.
    • Coat tofu cubes evenly with cornstarch and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Cook the Tofu:
    • Heat the Oil: Warm the vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
    • Fry the Tofu: Cook the tofu cubes until they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides, flipping as needed.
  3. Prepare the Sweet and Sour Sauce:
    • Mix rice vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, and soy sauce in a bowl.
    • Heat the mixture in a saucepan over medium heat and bring it to a simmer. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for 2-3 minutes until thickened.
  4. Stir-Fry Vegetables:
    • Sauté the onion and garlic in the same skillet until they become fragrant. Add bell pepper and ginger, cooking until tender.
    • Stir in pineapple chunks and cook for 2 minutes.
  5. Combine & Heat:
    • Return tofu to the skillet and pour the sauce over the mixture.
    • Stir well and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until everything is heated through.
  6. Serve:
    • Enjoy over steamed rice or noodles for a hearty meal.
